| Current and pending (other) support – (a) All resources made available, or expected to be made available, to an individual in support of the individual’s research and development efforts, regardless of (i) whether the source is foreign or domestic; (ii) whether the resource is made available through the entity applying for a research and development award, another organization or directly to the individual; or (iii) whether the resource has monetary value; and (b) includes in-kind contributions requiring a commitment of time and directly supporting the individual’s research and development efforts, such as the provision of office or laboratory space, equipment, supplies, employees or students. |

| Consulting that falls outside of an individual’s appointment; separate from institution’s agreement. For example, when any of the following scenarios apply: (i) the consulting activity will require the senior/key person to perform research as part of the consulting activity; (ii) the consulting activity does not involve performing research, but is related to the senior/key person’s research portfolio and may have the ability to impact funding, alter time or effort commitments, or otherwise impact scientific integrity; or (iii) the consulting entity has provided a contract that requires the senior/key person to conceal or withhold confidential financial or other ties between the senior/key person and the entity, irrespective of the duration of the engagement** |

*If a visiting scholar, graduate student, or post-doc is performing research in support of the PD/PI or other senior/key personnel’s research, then their support must be disclosed as an in-kind resource. If the relationship is solely a mentor/mentee arrangement, with no research activities (e.g., associated time commitment), then it is not a resource, and does not need to be reported.
In-kind support is non-monetary contributions that are uniquely available to senior/key personnel that provide valuable resources or services directly supporting the individual’s research and development efforts.
Below is a table of examples of in-kind support commonly reported in Current and Pending (Other) Support documents:
| Types of In-kind Support |
Example |
| Equipment |
Provision of equipment requiring a commitment of time and directly supports the individual’s research and development efforts. |
| Supplies |
Provision of supplies requiring commitment of time and directly supports the individual’s research and development efforts. |
| Office/Laboratory Space |
Provision of office or laboratory space requiring a commitment of time and directly supports the individual’s research and development efforts. |
| Employee or Student Resources |
Employees, postdoctoral scholars, students, or visiting scholars who are supported by an external entity, whose research activities are not intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed and have an associated time commitment. |
| Consulting Services |
Consulting that falls outside of an individual’s appointment; separate from institution’s agreement. |
| Travel |
Travel supported/paid by an external entity to perform research activities with an associated time commitment. |

See the Yale Research Security section for complete details on disclosure requirements.
** The same level of detail for these projects managed by the external entity is required on the Other Support form. Reminder: English versions of foreign agreements require advance review and must be uploaded to the Third-Party Agreement Library 30 days prior to the due date of the Other Support Submission and included with the Other Support submission.
For complete NIH disclosure requirements, please refer to the Revised NIH Disclosure Table.
For NSF Current and Pending (Other Support) Documents, a similar table is published on the NSF website.
Questions to help identify reportable affiliations or support:
- Do you hold any paid or unpaid appointment, position, or affiliation at any other entity, including universities, foundations, corporations, hospitals, and/or governmental agencies? This includes unpaid appointments such as “guest,” “adjunct,” “honorary,” or “visitor” titles.
- Do you participate in research at another institution for which that institution provides support, e.g., funding, use of equipment, dedicated laboratory space, materials, research data, or contributions by graduate, post-doctoral researchers or other scientific personnel?
- Excluding grants with a formal subaward to Yale, does your research program at Yale benefit from in-kind support from a source other than Yale e.g., visiting scholars, scientific personnel, high value materials (including data), equipment or other unique resources that are provided to you by an external entity?
- Excluding grants with a formal subaward to Yale, are you listed as a principal investigator, co-principal investigator, key personnel, or the equivalent on any grants proposed or awarded to another institution?
- Do you perform research as part of your external professional activities for an external entity?
Per NIH policy, supporting documentation, which includes copies of contracts/agreements specific to senior/key-personnel foreign appointments and/or employment with a foreign institution for all foreign activities and resources that are reported in Other Support must be included with the Other Support submission. If the contracts/agreements are not in English, translated copies must be provided. Examples include, but are not limited to:
Collaboration that provides a visiting scientist in the lab that works on PI’s projects
- An appointment at a foreign entity that provides the PI with space, staff and/or materials and supplies
- A grant/contract received by a foreign entity that the PI works on without a formal subaward to Yale (PI/key personnel)
- A consulting agreement or MOU where the PI is performing research with a foreign entity
NSF proposers and recipients are required to maintain supporting documentation, including copies of contracts, grants, or any other agreements specific to foreign appointments, employment with a foreign institution, participation in a foreign talent recruitment program and other information reported as current and pending (other) support for all senior/key personnel that must be available to NSF upon request.
Policy Requirement to Train Senior/Key Personnel on Other Support Disclosure
Effective 10/1/2025, training is required for all senior/key personnel prior to submission of Other Support (RPPR, JIT and proposals that require Other Support at time of submission). This requirement is fulfilled by completing Federal Agency Research Security Required Training in Workday Learning.
